With the release of the state of the art Kindle Dx, that’s a tough question. Some people have deep passion for e-books that they don’t care. If they get little more benefit from the new e-book device they just jump on. Yes, Kindle DX has more benefit over kindle 2:
- larger screen
- native PDF support
- PDF margin is cropped nicely for viewing the whole page bigger
- friendly viewing and reading e-books with pictures, tables , and diagrams etc.
- 4GB cpmpared to Kindle 2 only 2GB storage
- lucrative for reading PDF textbooks (some you might have, or some you can get on the net, legal/illegal)
Since Kindle DX is not out yet we don’t have any experience with using it. However, aftter reading kindle manual it seems to me that
- you can search words of PDF books, but not sure, whether you can use dictionary
- you can bookmark pages, but you can’t take note or highlight the text to save it in “my clipping”
I’m not sure why Amazon didn’t allow those features on Kindle DX, if I’m not wrong reading the manual. However, these are software issues, and amazon can solve the problems by upgrades of software later. I think, form textbook perspective, these are very important.
So, now if you think you can a large screen, and want to read PDF files or want to use it reading Journal atricles, technical or scientific books (for research purpose) kindle DX is the best avalable e-book device in the market. For casual reading or reading plain test fiction/non-fiction kindle 2 is okay to go with. If you don’t have any kindle now, it’s best to buy Kindle DX if you can afford it, otherwise go for kindle 2 – you can buy it new or used one.
So Who is the Kindle DX suited for?
The Kindle DX is great for:
- Textbooks - PDF support, low weight (no more heavy textbooks), low priced Kindle textbooks make it ideal for students. PDFs don’t allow notetaking.
- Business and Professional Use – You’ll love that kindle dx lets you carry around all your business and technical documents and PDFs.
- Anyone with low vision – Changeable fonts, eInk and landscape mode means great readability.
The DX is good for reading newspapers, magazines though keep in mind that it lacks color and the navigation is awkward.
